Science

Values

It is important to recognise that science takes place every day. Children will see that, even in mundane everyday activities, science is featured. We want to children to learn with no limits to what their ambitions are and grow up wanting to be astronauts, forensic scientists, conservationists or microbiologists.  Our science curriculum offers all children the opportunity to be exposed to the scientific concepts and be taught about how to work scientifically through practical, hands-on learning.

Aims

We aim to provide every child with a broad and balanced science curriculum, which enables all pupils to confidently explore and discover what is around them, so that they have a deeper understanding of the world we live in. With pupils learning the scientific and technology skills for jobs that do not exist (yet), we want our children to love science.

Intent

Pupils are provided with opportunities to take part in hands on learning with the use of our school field and an outdoor learning expert, who build on the learning in class and puts it into a real life context. Children are provided with the knowledge to work scientifically and apply their knowledge to the scientific skills. Throughout the year, pupils will have opportunities to experience all five working scientifically skills: grouping and classifying, observations over time, secondary research, comparative testing and pattern seeking.

Implementation

Science is taught within the curriculum, mapped out yearly with the Dimensions curriculum professionals to incorporate all the National Curriculum requirements for science. It is taught in every unit throughout the year in the Dimensions topic of choice; where science is not taught within the unit Jiffy Science units are used to bridge the gap, incorporating the ‘Working Scientifically’ elements into all the planning and carrying out of any science undertaken.

Impact

The impact of taught science is assessed through the use of books looks, termly teacher assessment of attainment, quizzes used as end of unit assessment completed on Kahoot (in coordination with the Dimensions curriculum to ensure fair assessment and coverage). All work completed within science lessons linked to the topic or in Jiffy Science has ample reflection of happenings and changes, progressing from Early Years to Year 6 to meet the different requirements of the age group.

Cultural capital
  • School visits and visitors look to boost engagement and enjoyment in a wide variety of ways. School visits throughout the year are a core curriculum offer and immersed in the teaching & learning of other subjects
  • Display of topic will have elements of science found on it as a point of reference.
