PSHE

Values

PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic) education is taught to help children and young people stay healthy, safe, and to be prepared for life’s challenges and opportunities. It develops critical thinking skills and empowers students to make informed decisions within a safe space in our school environment.

Aims

The aim of teaching PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education) is to provide children and young people with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to stay healthy, safe, and prepared for life, work, and economic opportunities in modern Britain. It aims to foster resilience, promote mental and physical wellbeing, develop confidence, and encourage the ability to make informed decisions about a wide range of personal and societal challenges, thereby enhancing their academic potential and ability to thrive.

Intent

Our intentions are to provide young people with the knowledge, skills, and values to lead healthy, safe, and productive lives, both now and in the future. We begin this learning journey in EYFS and aim to develop our pupils into confident individuals, responsible citizens, and successful learners who can navigate modern life’s opportunities and challenges. We want our young learners to be able to make positive and informed decisions in their Health and Well-being, Relationships, Safety, Citizenship, Life Skills and in their Economic well-being.

Implementation

PSHE is taught every other half term. We use a PSHE Programme, provided by the Dimensions Curriculum, titled 3D PSHE. This policy covers all aspects of Relationships Education and Health Education in an age-appropriate way. PSHE is also taught in every unit, throughout the year, in the Dimensions topic of choice. We also use our whole school assembly time as an opportunity for discussion, growth and development.

Impact

Learning is assessed in a variety of ways via the work children produce in their books, alongside the progress recorded in teacher assessments. Teachers will conduct ‘Book Looks’ to review the work taught and the progress made by the children. Evidence will be written, photographic and expressed through discussion and the arts. Our EYFS pupils will have their learning recorded on Tapestry, the online learning journal. We also have class PSHE folders, which are an ongoing working document and evidences the range of activities and multi-disciplinary approach that we have towards our teaching.

Cultural capital
  • Pupils are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of activities, enabling them to make significant contributions to both life in school and within the wider community.
  • Our PSHE Programme provides pupils with the means to handle many of the social, cultural, spiritual, physical and moral issues that occur throughout life.
  • Our children make positive contributions through engagement with the School Council, Eco Council and House Captains.
