Curriculum Principles

PHSE helps pupils stay healthy and safe and gives them the personal and social knowledge and skills they need to negotiate life’s challenges, opportunities and risks. The knowledge, skills and attributes taught within this curriculum have a positive impact in improving emotional wellbeing, academic attainment and preparation for adulthood.

Topics build year –on –year with increasing complexity and depth in a sequenced, spiral programme that builds on prior learning as the pupils’ progress through school.

Relationships Education is taught in EYFS, KS1 & KS2 (although only statutory in KS1 & KS2).

We use guidance from the Dimensions curriculum,  PSHE Association and other validated resources to support our work.

Knowledge organisation

The curriculum for PHSE is organised into three core themes:

  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Relationships
  • Living in the Wider World

Each of these core themes is separated into these strands:

  • Health and Wellbeing: Families and friendships; Safe relationships; Respecting ourselves and others
  • Relationships: Belonging to a community; Media literacy and digital resilience; Money and work
  • Living in the Wider World: Physical health and Mental wellbeing; Growing and Changing; Keeping safe
